Restaurant by Regent’s Canal

"The Lighterman" in London, England, is a stylish and versatile restaurant that functions as a pub, dining room, and bar, distinguished by its spectacular location along the Regent's Canal in the revitalized King's Cross area. It is part of the Open House group and has established itself as a staple in the local dining scene since its opening by offering a modern interpretation of British cuisine with European influences. With its three-story architecture and proximity to Granary Square, it is a popular meeting point for a vibrant mix of locals, students from the nearby Central Saint Martins, and visitors who appreciate the dynamic atmosphere and canal views.

Modern British cuisine London

The ambiance of The Lighterman is modern and open, with a clear focus on functionality and aesthetics. The glass and brick façade gives the building a contemporary look, while the interior, featuring warm wood accents and stylish furnishings, radiates an inviting warmth. Particularly noteworthy are the numerous outdoor seating options: the canal-side terrace on the ground floor offers a relaxed atmosphere right by the water, while the surrounding terrace on the top floor provides panoramic views of Granary Square and the canal – a perfect spot for balmy summer evenings. The noise level inside, especially on the ground floor, can be quite high, reflecting the lively character of the place, but it may not suit everyone's tastes. Nevertheless, the clever spatial arrangement ensures that the restaurant is suitable for both intimate gatherings and larger groups.

Culinary highlights in King’s Cross

Culinary-wise, The Lighterman offers an all-day menu crafted by head chef Diego Cardoso with great attention to detail. A highlight is the "Sunday Roast," a traditional Sunday dish featuring succulent meat, perfectly crispy roast potatoes, and a rich gravy, showcasing the British classic at its best. Also popular is the "Crispy Squid," an appetizer with tender squid in a crunchy coating, served with a spicy dip that stands out for its freshness. For mains, the "Grilled Hake," a grilled hake served with seasonal sides, delights with its light and flavorful preparation. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" shines, a warm, sweet cake with caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream, making for the perfect conclusion to a meal.

Cocktails and craft beer selections

The drinks menu is another highlight and reflects the versatility of the establishment. In addition to an impressive selection of draft and bottled beers, including local craft brews, there are seasonal cocktails made with fresh ingredients that often come with a creative twist. Particularly noteworthy are the "House Cocktails," which perfectly complement the flavors of the dishes. The wine list is carefully curated, offering a wide range from affordable options to premium selections. For those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages, there is high-quality coffee from Lavazza or refreshing soft drinks available throughout the day. The canal-side bar serves as a central meeting point and invites patrons to linger, whether for an aperitif or a post-meal drink.

We ate here on March 4th which was a beautiful spring day and so we could sit outside. I would like to thank Nico for looking after us so well. He could answer all my questions when I mentioned that I needed a gluten free meal and the salad was excellent and I loved the presentation of the meal. Easy to thank Nico as we saw him but thanks to the people in the kitchen as well.

Excellent venue I’ve been to with friends many times. Sadly they (the duty manager - short, aggressive gentleman with awful attitude) let themselves down today. After making us pay our bill half way through eating our lunch (including 12.5% service charge) (!), we complained about this and were offered some compensatory drinks by the member of staff serving our table, problem solved... Above mentioned gentleman then decided to cancel this settled issue and instead insisted on addressing the whole table with a heated argument trying to justify his position incorrectly, all very unnecessary and has a) tainted an afternoon with friends and b) has sadly resulted in us no longer choosing the venue in future. It is expensive for what you get, a given considering the location, but normally a great experience. If only the service had reflected this today.

Nice pub, but took an age to get our first round delivered to the table, despite ordering our drinks before the tables around us. You can’t goto the bar yourself which would have been much quicker. Mates started complaining about it but all was fine after that.

The Lighterman Restaurant came recommended to us, so on our trip to London in February 2025, we booked and thought we’d give it a go. Lovely setting, our table looked out on the canal. We were fortunate to be served by a fab waitress Rosy, from the moment we were seated, she made us feel welcome. She was efficient in taking orders, and checked in on us regularly without being intrusive. The food was amazing, especially the flatbreads, although everything we had was great. I highly recommend this restaurant experience! I look forward to my return.

Came here for the 1st time a few weekends ago with friends. Hands down this was the best Sunday roast I've had in a pub for years! Finally a pub that gets the roast potatoes (the most important bit!) perfectly! They were the perfect crispy brown and really fresh (IME so many pubs seem to serve their spuds pale (so often that I now always ask for them to be extra crispy though they still often fall short) or others taste stale/reheated. Here however they were perfect. The Yorkshire pud, gravy and veggies were also delicious. Great portion sizes and attentive service too. We will be back!

We just got out of the restaurant, whare I celebrated with my girlfriend my birthday. The meals were delightful as well as the drinks we were suggested to pick up. I took a glass of cider it was really good ! Again the cuisine is tasteful. you see and feel there is a research on the dishes and especially on the sauce ( the truffe sauce is a guilty pleasure!). We were served at a reasonable paste and the suggestions made by Sophie, our server, was reallly pertinent. It was a real pleasure having her on our table. She was reactive, smiling and full of good suggestions. I recommend her ! The restaurant is a little noisy when it's crowded. But nothing really problematic. At the end of our dinner, we went on to thanking the chef and his team for this delicious dinner we will remember for ages ! A place to go and to enjoy ! PS: Thank you again Sophie !

Great service and setting, close to the trains The staff tried to cater to my allergies but it didn’t leave me many options. I had soup which was lovely but didn’t have much choice if I were to go back
